IPL 2016 Eliminator Match Review: Sunrisers Hyderabad vs. Kolkata Knight Riders
On May 25, 2016, the stage was set at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi for the highly anticipated Eliminator match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2016, pitting the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). With both teams eager to keep their championship hopes alive, the clash promised to be a thrilling encounter.
The Sunrisers Hyderabad won the toss and opted to bat first, posting a total of 162 runs in their 20 overs. A combination of steady contributions from the batsmen helped SRH achieve a competitive score. David Warner started the innings but was unfortunately dismissed by Kuldeep Yadav for a modest score of 28 runs off 28 balls. Shikhar Dhawan couldn't make a significant impact either, falling for just 10 runs. Moises Henriques (31) and Yuvraj Singh (44) steadied the ship, with Yuvraj displaying some explosive shots, hitting eight boundaries and a six to accumulate his runs at a brisk strike rate of 146.66.
Deepak Hooda added 21 runs, but the innings struggled to maintain momentum as wickets fell at regular intervals. The late cameo from Bipul Sharma (14 not out) added some valuable runs, contributing to arr impressive total of 162 runs, while the total number of extras in the innings amounted to six.
In reply, the Kolkata Knight Riders struggled to find their rhythm from the very beginning. The team faced early setbacks, losing their top order quickly. Robin Uthappa was the first to go, dismissed for a mere 11 runs by Brainder Sran. The captain Gautam Gambhir managed to score 28 runs but couldn't anchor the innings as wickets kept tumbling around him. The highlight of KKR's innings was Manish Pandey, who valiantly fought against the bowling attack to score 36 runs off 28 balls. However, he lacked support from the other end.
The Sunrisers' bowling unit, led by Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Kuldeep Yadav, put up an impressive performance, restricting KKR to just 140 runs, ultimately sealing the match by a comfortable margin of 22 runs. Bhuvneshwar Kumar was the standout bowler for SRH, claiming three wickets for just 19 runs in his four overs, while Kuldeep Yadav was exceptional as well, taking three wickets for 35 runs.
With this victory, the Sunrisers Hyderabad advanced to the next stage of the tournament, keeping their quest for the title alive, while the Kolkata Knight Riders’ journey in IPL 2016 came to an end.
Overall, it was a well-rounded performance by Sunrisers Hyderabad, showcasing both their batting depth and bowling prowess, proving critical in their successful postseason bid.
